State launches stricter, compassion-focused environmental enforcement to curb indiscriminate waste disposal
The Ogun State Government has announced a tougher but humane approach to enforcing environmental laws, declaring that residents caught dumping refuse on roads or violating sanitation regulations will now be arrested, corrected with compassion, and assigned community service as their punishment.
The new directive, announced on Saturday, is part of a broader effort to curb the growing problem of indiscriminate waste disposal across major towns and highways in the state. According to the government, the practice has not only contributed to flooding and public health concerns but has also undermined the aesthetics and cleanliness of urban centres.
Officials say the revised enforcement strategy aims to instill discipline while maintaining dignity, giving offenders an opportunity to learn and contribute positively to their communities. Community service will include supervised street cleaning, waste sorting, sanitation support and other environment-improving tasks.
The state government stressed that the initiative is not designed to punish residents harshly but to correct harmful habits and encourage public responsibility. It added that mobile environmental task forces will intensify monitoring to ensure full compliance across all local government areas.
Residents are urged to use designated waste bins, collaborate with approved waste collectors, and support the government’s ongoing efforts to build a cleaner, safer and healthier Ogun State.
