Federal Government Proposes N102.3 Billion Counterpart Funding for Lagos Green Line Rail Project

Proposed investment aims to fast-track mass transit expansion, ease traffic congestion, and strengthen urban mobility across Lagos

The Federal Government has proposed a N102.3 billion counterpart funding commitment for the Lagos Green Line rail project, reaffirming its support for large-scale urban transportation infrastructure designed to decongest Nigeria’s commercial capital and improve mobility for millions of residents.

The proposed funding, which forms part of a broader collaboration between the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government, is expected to accelerate the development of the Green Line rail corridor, a strategic mass transit route planned to connect key economic and residential hubs across Lagos. The project is seen as a critical component of ongoing efforts to modernise public transportation, reduce travel time, cut carbon emissions, and boost economic productivity in the state.

Officials familiar with the proposal say the Federal Government’s counterpart funding is intended to complement Lagos State’s investments and attract additional financing from development partners and the private sector. Once completed, the Green Line rail is expected to significantly ease pressure on the city’s overstretched road network, which currently carries the bulk of daily commuter traffic.

Transportation experts note that the Green Line will serve densely populated communities while improving access to employment centres, ports, and industrial zones, thereby supporting trade and economic growth. The rail line is also aligned with national infrastructure development
