Majority of proposed funding for Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development earmarked for infrastructure upgrades and sector growth
The Federal Government has proposed a total allocation of ₦87.31 billion for the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and its agencies in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, signalling a strong focus on capital investment aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector. The proposal underscores the government’s intention to improve aviation infrastructure, enhance safety standards, and support long-term growth across the industry.
According to details of the budget estimate submitted to the National Assembly, a significant portion of the ₦87.31 billion allocation is dedicated to capital expenditure, reflecting a shift toward tangible projects rather than recurrent spending. The funds are expected to support airport rehabilitation and expansion, procurement of critical equipment, improvement of navigational and safety systems, and ongoing aviation modernization initiatives.
The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development oversees key agencies including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB). Budgetary provisions for these agencies are designed to address longstanding infrastructure gaps, boost regulatory oversight, and ensure compliance with international aviation standards.
Industry stakeholders have consistently called for increased capital investment to tackle challenges such as aging airport facilities, limited cargo and maintenance capacity, and safety infrastructure deficits. The proposed 2026 allocation is seen as a response to these concerns, with expectations that improved funding will enhance passenger experience, attract foreign investment, and position Nigeria as a stronger regional aviation hub.
The budget proposal will undergo legislative scrutiny in the coming weeks, with lawmakers expected to review, debate, and possibly adjust allocations before final passage. If approved, the 2026 aviation budget could mark a significant step toward revitalising Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace ecosystem and unlocking its economic potential.
