Students Remanded After Demonstration Against Rising Kidnapping and Insecurity, Nigerian Student Body Demands Immediate Release
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the ongoing detention of 52 students from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who were remanded following a protest over escalating kidnapping and insecurity in Edo State.
The students reportedly organized a peaceful demonstration to voice concerns over the rising cases of abduction, harassment, and threats to safety in their communities. However, law enforcement authorities intervened, leading to the arrest and subsequent remand of dozens of participants.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NANS described the detention as “unnecessary, oppressive, and a violation of students’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression.” The association called on the Edo State government and relevant security agencies to immediately release the students and engage with them constructively to address their concerns.
“The continuous detention of these students for exercising their constitutional rights is unacceptable. They protested not out of disobedience, but out of genuine concern for their safety and the security of their communities,” NANS stated.
The student body further urged the federal government to strengthen measures against kidnapping and insecurity nationwide, warning that continued inaction could exacerbate public unrest.
As the debate over security intensifies in Edo State, the fate of the remanded students remains a pressing concern, with human rights activists, parents, and fellow students calling for transparency, dialogue, and justice.
