National Sports Commission Allocates ₦4 Billion to Support Athletes and Retired Nigerian Sports Stars

Funding targets welfare, development programmes, and post-career support as government moves to strengthen sports sector

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has earmarked a total of ₦4 billion in its latest budget to support Nigerian athletes and retired international sports stars, marking a major step toward improving welfare, development, and long-term sustainability in the country’s sports sector.

According to details of the allocation, the funds are designed to cover athlete welfare, preparation for international competitions, training and development programmes, as well as support packages for retired sportsmen and women who have represented Nigeria at the highest levels. The move is aimed at addressing long-standing concerns about inadequate support for athletes during and after their competitive careers.

Officials explained that a significant portion of the budget will be channelled into athlete development, including training camps, access to modern facilities, coaching, and sports science support. This is expected to boost performance and ensure Nigerian athletes remain competitive on the global stage.

The allocation also places strong emphasis on the welfare of retired internationals, many of whom have struggled with financial and health challenges after leaving active sports. The NSC said the funding would help provide pensions, medical support, and empowerment initiatives to assist former athletes in transitioning into life beyond competitive sports.

Sports stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive signal of renewed government commitment to sports development and athlete welfare. They noted that sustained and transparent implementation of the budget would be key to restoring confidence and inspiring young talents across the country.

The National Sports Commission reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, stating that mechanisms would be put in place to ensure the funds are properly utilised and reach the intended beneficiaries. The commission added that the investment aligns with broader efforts to reposition sports as a viable career path and a tool for national unity and international recognition.
