Nigeria’s Palm Oil Production Hits 1.57 Million Tonnes in 2025, Boosting Global Market Ambitions

Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries reports steady five-year growth as Nigeria seeks to reclaim industry leadership

Nigeria’s palm oil production has climbed to 1.57 million tonnes in 2025, marking steady growth over the past five years and renewing international interest in the country’s drive to reclaim a dominant position in the global palm oil market.

The latest figures were disclosed by the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries, which highlighted Nigeria’s improving output capacity amid broader efforts to revitalize the agricultural sector. Analysts say the increase reflects expanding cultivation, improved farming techniques, and renewed investment across key palm-producing regions.

Palm oil remains a strategic commodity in global trade, widely used in food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and biofuel production. Nigeria, once a global leader in palm oil exports decades ago, has in recent years intensified policies aimed at reducing imports, boosting local production, and encouraging agro-industrial expansion.

Industry stakeholders note that the upward production trend signals positive momentum for economic diversification, particularly as the country seeks to strengthen non-oil exports. Increased domestic output is also expected to improve food security, create rural employment opportunities, and stimulate value-added processing industries.

Experts emphasize that sustaining growth will depend on continued investment in modern processing facilities, improved seedlings, access to financing for smallholder farmers, and enhanced supply chain efficiency. With production reaching 1.57 million tonnes in 2025, Nigeria’s renewed ambition to compete more strongly in the global palm oil market appears to be gaining measurable traction.
