The Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved approximately ₦10 billion to sustain free HIV/AIDS treatment and enhance cancer treatment facilities across Nigeria.
The approval is aimed at ensuring the continued provision of antiretroviral therapy for persons living with HIV, while also improving access to quality cancer diagnosis and treatment services in public health institutions. Officials said the funding will support critical medical infrastructure, procurement of essential drugs, and upgrades to oncology equipment.
Government representatives noted that the decision reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and reduce the financial burden on vulnerable patients. The allocation is expected to help maintain treatment continuity for thousands of Nigerians currently enrolled in HIV care programmes, while also addressing gaps in cancer management services.
Health sector stakeholders have long emphasized the need for sustained funding to combat HIV transmission and improve cancer survival rates. The council’s approval is seen as a strategic intervention to reinforce national health priorities and expand access to life-saving treatment.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that essential medical services remain accessible and affordable to citizens nationwide.
