Mo Abudu Urges Nigerians to Build Local Streaming Platforms, Says “No One Is Coming to Save Us”

Media entrepreneur calls for stronger local investment in digital distribution for African content

Nigerian media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has called on Nigerians and African creatives to invest in building strong local streaming platforms, stressing that the continent must take responsibility for the distribution of its own stories.

Speaking on the future of African entertainment and digital media, Abudu said the industry cannot rely solely on foreign platforms to sustain its growth. According to her, Africans must develop and support homegrown streaming services that prioritize local content and ensure greater control over distribution.

“No one is coming to save us,” she said, emphasizing the need for local innovation and investment in technology-driven media platforms.

Abudu noted that while global streaming companies have helped bring African stories to international audiences, the long-term growth of the industry will depend on Africans creating sustainable systems that allow creators to retain ownership and maximize revenue from their work.

She added that building local streaming platforms would not only strengthen the creative economy but also expand opportunities for filmmakers, actors, writers, and other professionals in the entertainment sector.

Industry stakeholders say the call reflects a growing conversation across Africa about digital independence, content ownership, and the need for stronger local infrastructure to support the continent’s rapidly expanding creative industry.
