Agency says most statutory obligations now funded through internally generated revenue
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has expressed concern over persistent funding challenges affecting its operations, stating that a significant portion of its statutory responsibilities is currently being financed through its Internally Generated Revenue.
Officials of the agency noted that while NiMET plays a critical role in providing weather forecasts, climate monitoring, and aviation meteorological services, inadequate budgetary allocations have placed pressure on its ability to fully execute its mandate. According to the agency, reliance on internally generated funds has become necessary to sustain essential services.
NiMET emphasized that its responsibilities include issuing weather advisories, supporting aviation safety, providing climate data for agriculture and disaster management, and contributing to national planning. The agency warned that limited funding could affect infrastructure upgrades, equipment maintenance, research activities, and staff capacity development.
The agency called for improved financial support to enable it to meet both domestic and international obligations, particularly as climate variability and extreme weather events continue to increase. It stressed that adequate funding is crucial to strengthening early warning systems and safeguarding lives, property, and economic activities.
Stakeholders in the environmental and aviation sectors have underscored the importance of sustained investment in meteorological services, noting that accurate weather data remains essential for national development and disaster risk reduction.
