A Nigerian mother has sparked debate on social media after expressing concern over the growing culture of competition among private school students. In a viral post, she recounted a scenario where her children returned from school with gifts such as a bicycle and an Echolac bag, explaining that the items were handed out during a classmate’s birthday celebration.

The mother argued that such practices are creating unnecessary pressure on parents and children alike, saying, “Imagine your children came back from school with a bicycle and Echolac bag and you ask them where they got it from and they said their classmates are celebrating their birthday. Dear parents and private schools, it’s a school and not a competition ground. If you think because you shared a bicycle with my children on your kid’s birthday and you expect me to share the same thing, you’re joking.”

Her post resonated with other parents who shared similar frustrations, highlighting how material expectations and competitive displays can place undue financial and emotional pressure on families. Many called for schools to focus more on education and values rather than fostering an environment where celebrations turn into a measure of status or wealth.

Education analysts say that while birthday celebrations can be enjoyable for children, they should not become a source of comparison or rivalry among students. Experts encourage schools and parents to establish guidelines that emphasize inclusion, fairness, and moderation, ensuring that all children can participate without creating anxiety or competition.

The post has since sparked a wider conversation among Nigerian parents and educators, with social media users debating the role of private schools in shaping not only academic but social and emotional development, urging a balance between celebration and education.
