Energy leader becomes first Nigerian to receive global honour for contributions to sustainable energy

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Chief Executive Officer and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Sustainable Energy for All, Damilola Ogunbiyi, on being recognised with the TIME Earth Award.

Ogunbiyi made history as the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious global recognition, which celebrates individuals making significant contributions toward addressing climate change and advancing sustainable energy solutions around the world.

In his congratulatory message, President Tinubu commended Ogunbiyi for her outstanding leadership in promoting energy access and sustainable development, noting that her work continues to place Nigeria prominently on the global stage in the area of clean energy advocacy.

Ogunbiyi currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Sustainable Energy for All, as well as the Co Chair of UN Energy, a global platform that coordinates energy related activities across the United Nations system.

Her efforts have focused on expanding energy access, promoting renewable energy adoption, and supporting global initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable development goals related to affordable and clean energy.

The President described the award as a source of pride for Nigeria, stating that Ogunbiyi’s recognition reflects the growing influence of Nigerians contributing to global development and climate action.
