Domestic carriers threaten to suspend operations from April 20 if urgent intervention is not implemented
The Airline Operators of Nigeria has warned that domestic airlines may suspend operations nationwide from April 20 if the rising cost of aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1, is not urgently addressed by relevant authorities.
The operators expressed concern that the continuous increase in fuel prices has significantly raised operational costs, making it increasingly difficult for airlines to sustain services across the country. Aviation fuel remains one of the most critical expenses for airlines, accounting for a large portion of total operating costs.
According to the association, failure to resolve the issue could lead to a complete shutdown of domestic flight operations, which would disrupt air travel, affect business activities, and impact passengers who rely on air transport for movement across Nigeria.
Industry stakeholders have called on the Federal Government and key regulators to intervene swiftly by implementing measures that will stabilise fuel supply and reduce pricing pressures. They also emphasised the need for long term solutions to address recurring challenges in the aviation sector.
Analysts warn that a shutdown of domestic airlines would have far reaching economic implications, including reduced connectivity, loss of revenue, and potential job losses within the aviation industry. The situation has heightened calls for urgent dialogue between airline operators and government authorities to prevent disruptions and ensure the continued operation of domestic air services.
