CPPE Calls on Federal Government to Cut Solar Import Duties to 5% and Grant VAT Waiver

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise urges fiscal reforms to reduce solar energy costs and boost renewable energy adoption in Nigeria.

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to reduce import duties on solar energy equipment to 5% and grant a Value Added Tax (VAT) waiver on related products.

According to the group, the proposed fiscal adjustments are necessary to lower the cost of renewable energy solutions and accelerate access to electricity, particularly in underserved and off-grid communities.

CPPE noted that high import charges and taxes have continued to limit the affordability and widespread adoption of solar technologies in Nigeria, despite growing demand for alternative power sources amid persistent energy challenges.

The organisation urged policymakers to adopt friendlier tariff structures that would encourage private sector investment in the renewable energy sector, create jobs, and support the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

Stakeholders in the energy sector are expected to continue discussions as part of broader efforts to improve energy access and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
