A United States envoy linked to former President Donald Trump has reportedly proposed that Iran be replaced by Italy in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, a move that has generated significant international attention.
According to reports, the proposal was made by U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli, who suggested to both Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy should take Iran’s place in the tournament. Zampolli reportedly argued that Italy’s strong football pedigree, including four World Cup titles, makes the team deserving of inclusion despite failing to qualify.
The move is believed to be tied partly to diplomatic considerations, including efforts to ease tensions between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following disagreements linked to geopolitical issues.
However, Iran has already qualified for the World Cup through the standard qualification process and has indicated its intention to participate. Officials from Iran’s football federation say preparations for the tournament are ongoing, while FIFA has not announced any decision supporting the proposed replacement.

Football analysts note that under FIFA regulations, any replacement of a qualified team would typically follow established procedures, often involving teams from the same confederation, making the proposal highly unlikely.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to proceed as planned, with final decisions on participating teams resting solely with FIFA.
