Ijaka Oke Kingdom Honours Ifayemi Elebuibon at OAU Annual Lecture in Ile-Ife

Royal fathers, scholars, cultural leaders and devotees gather for colourful celebration of Yoruba heritage and Ifa tradition

The Institute of Cultural Studies at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, hosted the annual Ifayemi Elebuibon Lecture in honour of Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, the Araba Awo of Osogbo, in a richly attended cultural and academic gathering that celebrated Yoruba tradition and heritage.

The event, themed “Osundagbonu Ifayemi Elebuibon: The Man, The Myth and the Messenger of Ifa,” brought together royal fathers, traditional rulers, academics, students, cultural groups, and devotees of Ifa from within and outside Osun State.

The lecture was delivered by Professor Adebisi Ademakinwa of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, University of Lagos, while HRM Oba Dr. Hammed Makama Adekunle Oyelude CON, the Olowu of Owu Kuta in Osun State, served as chairman of the occasion. The event also had in attendance key representatives from the Ooni of Ife’s palace, including Queen Ashley Folasade Adeyeye-Ogunwusi, who represented the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.

Dignitaries present included the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, alongside the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Gbenga Fasiku, and the Director of the Institute of Cultural Studies, Professor Olusegun Oladosu, who convened the lecture.

The programme was described as colourful and deeply cultural, featuring remarks from the institute, goodwill messages, and strong participation from traditional religion worshippers’ associations across Osun State. Royal fathers and mothers, university management, colleagues of the celebrant, students, friends, and members of the public all graced the occasion.

Stakeholders described the lecture as a strong affirmation of Yoruba cultural identity and the continuing relevance of Ifa tradition in contemporary society. The gathering also highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge systems and promoting cultural education within academic institutions.

In recognition of his contributions to Yoruba culture and traditional religious scholarship, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon was honoured during the event, with tributes describing him as a custodian of heritage, wisdom, and spiritual knowledge.

The celebration concluded with renewed calls for the documentation and preservation of Yoruba cultural values, as well as greater collaboration between traditional institutions and academic bodies in promoting indigenous history and philosophy.
