Nigeria Police Arrest, Repatriate Chinese Fugitive Over Alleged $245 Million Ponzi Scheme

Xu Qing returned to China following coordinated international operation on large-scale financial fraud case

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and repatriated a Chinese fugitive, Xu Qing, to the People’s Republic of China over his alleged involvement in a $245 million Ponzi scheme.

Police authorities disclosed that the suspect was apprehended in Nigeria following intelligence-led operations and international collaboration with Chinese law enforcement agencies. The repatriation was carried out in line with existing bilateral agreements and global efforts to combat transnational financial crimes.

Xu Qing is accused of orchestrating a large-scale Ponzi scheme that reportedly defrauded investors of millions of dollars. Such schemes typically involve the use of funds from new investors to pay returns to earlier investors, creating an illusion of profitability while concealing the absence of legitimate business activity.

Officials emphasized that the operation reflects Nigeria’s commitment to supporting international law enforcement and ensuring that individuals involved in financial crimes are brought to justice, regardless of their location.

Security experts note that the arrest and extradition highlight the growing importance of cross-border cooperation in tackling complex financial crimes, which often span multiple jurisdictions and involve sophisticated networks.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen partnerships with global counterparts in order to address criminal activities that undermine financial systems and public trust, both locally and internationally.
