Bayo Onanuga Accuses Media of Exaggerating Nigeria's Security Challenges

Presidential aide insists insecurity remains a concern but rejects claims that the country is under siege.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has accused sections of the Nigerian media of creating what he described as a false impression that the country is overwhelmed by insecurity.

According to Onanuga, while security challenges remain a serious concern requiring sustained government attention, the situation does not justify narratives suggesting that Nigeria is under siege or on the brink of collapse.

The presidential aide maintained that the government continues to make efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities across different parts of the country, stressing that security agencies are recording notable successes in several operations.

He argued that some media reports tend to focus predominantly on negative developments without giving adequate attention to progress made by security forces, thereby creating a distorted perception of the nation's security situation.

Onanuga urged media organisations to balance their reporting by highlighting both the challenges and the gains recorded in ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across the country.

His remarks come amid increasing public debate over the state of security in Nigeria following recent incidents of kidnappings, bandit attacks and other violent crimes reported in various regions.

The comments have since generated reactions from stakeholders, with some supporting the call for balanced reporting while others insist that media coverage reflects genuine concerns about the security challenges facing many communities across the country.
