JAMB Ends Admissions into Affiliated Degree Programmes in Colleges of Education

Policy shift makes the Nigeria Certificate in Education the sole entry route into Colleges of Education from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has formally discontinued admissions into affiliated degree programmes offered by Colleges of Education, marking a significant reform in Nigeria's teacher education system.

The decision means that beginning with the 2026/2027 academic session, the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) will become the sole entry qualification for students seeking admission into Colleges of Education across the country.

The policy is aimed at strengthening the role of Colleges of Education as specialised institutions for teacher training while reinforcing the NCE as the foundational qualification for aspiring educators.

For years, many Colleges of Education partnered with universities to offer affiliated degree programmes, enabling students to obtain bachelor's degrees through such collaborations. However, with the new directive, admissions into those programmes will cease, signaling a major restructuring of the nation's teacher education framework.

Education stakeholders say the move is expected to restore the original mandate of Colleges of Education, enhance the quality of teacher preparation and create a more structured pathway for professional teacher development.

The development represents one of the most significant changes in Nigeria's education sector in recent years and is expected to have far-reaching implications for prospective students, tertiary institutions and the future of teacher education nationwide.
