Farmers have assured Nigerians that the price of tomatoes is expected to decline significantly by October as increased harvests enter markets across the country.
The assurance comes amid concerns over rising food prices, with tomatoes remaining one of the agricultural commodities that have experienced periodic price fluctuations due to seasonal factors, transportation costs, weather conditions, and supply challenges.
According to farmers, the anticipated price reduction is linked to the expected arrival of larger harvest volumes from major tomato-producing regions, which could increase market supply and help stabilise prices.
Agricultural stakeholders noted that periods of scarcity often occur when production levels decline due to seasonal transitions, pest infestations, flooding, or other environmental factors that affect crop yields.
They explained that as more farms begin harvesting in the coming months, the increased availability of fresh tomatoes is expected to improve supply chains and reduce market pressure, leading to more affordable prices for consumers.
The projected decline in tomato prices could provide relief for households, food vendors, restaurants, and businesses that rely heavily on the commodity for food preparation and processing.
Experts, however, caution that factors such as transportation costs, storage infrastructure, weather conditions, and market demand could still influence the extent of any price reduction.
Tomatoes remain one of the most widely consumed agricultural products in Nigeria, making changes in their market price a key concern for consumers and food industry stakeholders alike.
With farmers expressing optimism about upcoming harvests, many Nigerians will be hoping that increased production translates into lower prices and improved affordability in the months ahead.
