Nollywood actor Ugo Nwokolo has stirred reactions after sharing his views on the role of internet fraud, popularly known as "Yahoo," in Nigeria's economy.
Speaking on the issue, the actor suggested that proceeds from internet fraud have, in his opinion, helped sustain economic activities amid the country's rising cost of living.
"Personally, I think Yahoo has helped keep the economy afloat. Do you expect a civil servant to afford house rent of ₦3 million or ₦5 million in Abuja?" Nwokolo said.
The comments have generated widespread debate on social media, with some users pointing to the economic pressures facing Nigerians, while others criticised the remarks, stressing that internet fraud is illegal and should not be justified regardless of economic circumstances.
