Churches Should Not Offer Accommodation Without Proper Screening, Moruf Yusuf Warns

Security expert urges places of worship to balance compassion with vigilance, saying unverified accommodation arrangements could expose congregations and surrounding communities to avoidable security threats.

Security expert and public safety advocate, Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has cautioned churches against providing temporary accommodation to individuals without first carrying out proper identity verification and security checks.

Yusuf gave the warning in Series 90 of The Secure Mind, his daily security awareness initiative focused on promoting preventive thinking and strengthening public safety through practical security advice.

Speaking on the theme, "Churches Should Exercise Caution When Providing Accommodation," the security expert acknowledged that churches have long served as places of refuge, compassion and humanitarian support for people in need. However, he stressed that acts of kindness should always be accompanied by wisdom and appropriate security measures.

According to him, offering shelter to individuals whose identities, backgrounds and circumstances have not been properly verified could unintentionally expose churches, worshippers and neighbouring communities to serious security risks.

Yusuf warned that criminal elements could exploit such arrangements to conceal their identities, gather intelligence about church activities, plan unlawful acts or use church premises as temporary hideouts.

He advised church leaders to establish clear procedures for providing humanitarian assistance, including proper identification, documentation, responsible supervision and periodic monitoring of anyone accommodated within church facilities.

The security expert also encouraged churches to collaborate with relevant security agencies and trusted community leaders whenever the need arises, particularly in situations involving unfamiliar individuals or sensitive cases requiring additional verification.

He noted that protecting a place of worship extends beyond safeguarding buildings and property, adding that it also involves protecting the lives, safety and well-being of everyone who worships, serves or seeks help within the church environment.

Yusuf maintained that churches can continue to fulfil their humanitarian mission while adopting responsible security practices that minimise risks.

Kindness should always be guided by wisdom, vigilance and appropriate security measures,” he said.

Through The Secure Mind, Moruf Yusuf continues to educate Nigerians on practical measures that promote vigilance, crime prevention and responsible decision-making in homes, workplaces, religious institutions and communities.

Moruf Yusuf, also known as Ojogbon, holds professional affiliations and qualifications including ANIPR, MISN, FCAI, FIIM and MSPSP.
