National Assembly Members Demanded N200m Bribe From Me During Budget Defence, Dalung Alleges

Former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung claims lawmakers demanded money from him during his first budget defence under the Buhari administration.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has alleged that some members of the National Assembly demanded a N200 million bribe from him during his first budget defence as minister.

Dalung, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, said the alleged demand was made when he appeared before lawmakers to defend the ministry’s proposed budget.

According to the former minister, the lawmakers demanded N200 million from him during the budget defence process.

Dalung’s allegation has raised fresh concerns about corruption and the level of transparency surrounding the passage and approval of government budgets.

The former minister did not suggest that every member of the National Assembly was involved, but his claim has renewed conversations about alleged demands for money during interactions between government ministries and legislative committees.

Budget defence sessions allow ministries, departments and agencies to explain their proposed spending plans before lawmakers examine and approve allocations.

Dalung served as Minister of Youth and Sports Development between 2015 and 2019 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

As of the time of filing this report, the National Assembly had not publicly responded to Dalung’s allegation.
