Security expert Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has advised Nigerians to exercise caution when giving their phones to friends or repairers for repairs.
Yusuf gave the advice in Series #132 of The Secure Mind, titled “Your Phone Should Not Be Given to Just Anyone for Repair.”
He noted that mobile phones contain valuable personal, financial, professional and private information, making them potential targets for unauthorised access when handed over for repairs.
According to him, individuals should take appropriate security precautions before giving their devices to anyone, particularly when the phone contains sensitive information.
He advised phone owners to back up important files, use available security settings and avoid unnecessarily sharing passwords or PINs with repairers.
Where possible, he also recommended removing sensitive information from a device before handing it over for repairs.
Yusuf stressed that users should be deliberate about protecting their personal information, even when seeking assistance with a faulty device.
He warned that individuals with malicious intentions could exploit access to a customer's phone to view or obtain sensitive information.
“A person with ulterior motives can access information on a customer's phone.”
He urged Nigerians to treat phone repairs as a potential privacy and security risk and take reasonable steps to protect their information before handing over their devices.
