Snake sightings often trigger fear and panic, driven by widespread myths, misconceptions and, in some cases, spiritual beliefs. However, herpetologist Taiwo Okikiola says these reptiles remain among the most misunderstood animals.
Despite facing criticism and even being labelled "a witch" because of her work with snakes, Okikiola has continued to use social media to educate the public on the importance of snake conservation and the role snakes play in maintaining ecological balance.
Through her advocacy, she aims to dispel harmful myths, encourage informed responses to snake encounters and promote greater appreciation for wildlife conservation.
Her efforts have earned praise from conservation advocates, while also highlighting the challenges faced by environmental educators working to change deeply rooted public perceptions.
