Security expert Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has emphasized the importance of understanding the distinct roles of security guards and armed security personnel, noting that effective protection depends on assigning the right professionals to the appropriate responsibilities.
The advice is contained in Series #105 of The Secure Mind, his daily security awareness campaign dedicated to promoting public safety, security education and crime prevention.
According to Yusuf, security guards and armed security personnel perform different functions, and clients should carefully assess their security needs before engaging any security service.
He explained that security guards are trained to observe their environment, conduct patrols, control access to premises, report suspicious activities, de-escalate conflicts where possible and support emergency response efforts. However, he stressed that they are not authorized to carry firearms unless specifically permitted under the law and assigned to such duties through the appropriate government authorities.
Yusuf noted that expecting unarmed security guards to perform the duties of armed personnel can expose both security operatives and the public to unnecessary risks. He therefore urged organisations, businesses and individuals to engage qualified personnel whose training and legal authority match the security challenges they face.
He added that understanding the limitations and responsibilities of each security role is a key component of effective security planning.
