The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers that the expiration date on a U.S. visa does not determine how long they are legally permitted to stay in the United States.
The Mission explained that a visa allows a traveller to seek entry into the U.S., but the period of authorized stay is determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port of entry and reflected in the traveler's admission record.
The advisory comes amid increased scrutiny of visa overstays, with U.S. authorities urging visitors to comply strictly with the terms of their admission.
The Mission advised travellers to check the duration of stay authorized upon arrival and to leave the United States before that period expires to avoid immigration violations that could affect future travel or visa applications.
