The newly inaugurated President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, has vowed to sanction lawyers who use abusive, insulting or disparaging language against their colleagues on social media.
Badejo-Okusanya said the legal profession must uphold standards of professionalism, civility and respect, both within and outside the courtroom.
She warned that lawyers should not use social media platforms as spaces to attack or denigrate fellow members of the profession, stressing that professional conduct should also extend to online interactions.
The NBA President's position is part of a broader call for lawyers to maintain the dignity and ethical standards expected of members of the legal profession, regardless of disagreements or differences of opinion.
Her warning comes amid growing concerns over the use of social media by professionals to engage in public disputes, personal attacks and exchanges that could undermine the reputation of the legal profession.
Badejo-Okusanya said lawyers found to have violated professional standards through abusive online conduct could face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with established rules governing the profession.
Her administration is expected to focus on strengthening professional ethics, accountability and public confidence in the Nigerian legal profession.
