FG Moves to Ensure Every Child Is Registered at Birth and Recognised by Law

Federal Government renews commitment to universal birth registration and legal identity for every Nigerian child.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every child in Nigeria is registered at birth and legally recognised.

The government said universal birth registration is essential to giving children a legal identity and ensuring they can access basic rights and public services.

Birth registration provides official documentation of a child's identity, including their name, date and place of birth, and parentage. It can also help children access education, healthcare and other government services while providing protection against risks such as child trafficking and exploitation.

The renewed commitment comes amid efforts to improve civil registration and vital statistics across the country and ensure that children are not left without official proof of their identity.

The Federal Government is expected to continue working with relevant agencies, state governments and other stakeholders to expand access to birth registration, particularly in underserved and rural communities.

It also urged parents and guardians to register children promptly after birth, stressing that every child deserves a legal identity and recognition under the law.
