Chinese imports from Nigeria surged by 81 per cent year-on-year to $2.25 billion in the first half of 2026, according to the reported trade figures.
The increase follows China’s implementation of a zero-tariff policy on products from 53 African countries, including Nigeria.
The policy is aimed at expanding trade between China and African countries by reducing tariff barriers on eligible products entering the Chinese market.
The latest figures suggest growing demand for Nigerian products in China and could provide opportunities for Nigerian exporters to increase their access to the large Chinese market.
The development also highlights the potential benefits of stronger Nigeria-China trade relations, particularly if Nigerian businesses can increase production and meet international quality and export requirements.
