Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has called on Nigerians to exercise caution when disposing of refuse, stressing that improper waste burning remains a major cause of preventable fire outbreaks, injuries and environmental pollution.
In Series #112 of The Secure Mind, titled "Safe Ways to Burn Refuse," Yusuf highlighted the importance of adopting safe waste disposal practices to protect lives, property and the environment.
According to him, while refuse burning may still be practised in some communities where it is permitted by law, it should only be carried out under safe conditions and in locations that pose no threat to people or surrounding property.
He advised that refuse should only be burned in open spaces located far away from residential buildings, vehicles, fuel storage areas, electrical installations, dry vegetation, power lines and other combustible materials that could easily ignite and cause uncontrolled fires.
Yusuf further warned against burning hazardous materials such as chemicals, gas cylinders, batteries, aerosol cans and other pressurised or toxic substances, noting that such items can explode or release dangerous fumes capable of causing serious injuries and environmental contamination.
He emphasised that anyone burning refuse should never leave the fire unattended and should always keep water, sand or a functional fire extinguisher nearby to quickly contain the fire if it spreads unexpectedly.
The security expert encouraged individuals, households and organisations to prioritise approved waste management methods wherever available, including proper collection, recycling and disposal through authorised environmental agencies.
According to him, responsible refuse disposal is not only a matter of environmental cleanliness but also a vital public safety responsibility that helps reduce the risk of fires, protects public health and preserves the environment for future generations.
Yusuf urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and adopt safer habits in handling waste, adding that simple preventive measures can significantly reduce avoidable emergencies and promote safer communities.
