Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has cautioned property owners against excessive installation of burglar proofs, warning that poorly planned security measures can become dangerous during emergencies.
In Series #118 of The Secure Mind, titled "It's Unwise to Fix Too Many Burglar Proofs," Yusuf explained that burglar proofs are commonly installed on windows, doors and other openings to deter criminals and improve the security of residential and commercial buildings.
However, he stressed that excessive or improperly designed burglar proofs can create serious safety risks, particularly during fire outbreaks and other emergencies when occupants may need to evacuate a building quickly.
According to Yusuf, security measures should not inadvertently turn a home into a trap. He noted that blocked windows, reinforced doors and heavily secured exits can make it difficult or even impossible for occupants to escape when the main entrance is inaccessible.
He therefore urged property owners to consider emergency evacuation when planning their security arrangements, ensuring that essential escape routes remain accessible and functional.
The security expert also cautioned that installing numerous burglar proofs does not automatically guarantee complete protection from criminals. He advocated a more comprehensive security approach involving adequate lighting, surveillance systems, secure doors and locks, neighbourhood vigilance and other appropriate preventive measures.
Yusuf encouraged homeowners to consult qualified professionals when designing security installations so that protective measures can be properly integrated with fire and emergency safety requirements.
He emphasised that the objective of building security should be to protect lives and property without compromising the ability of occupants to escape during emergencies.
He also urged families to have emergency evacuation plans and ensure that everyone in the household understands how to exit the building safely in the event of a fire or other life-threatening incident.
"Burglar proofs should be used responsibly without blocking essential escape routes."
