Incident raises renewed concerns over public safety as experts warn against the dangers of fuel scooping.

A group of Nigerians has been spotted scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, despite the significant risks associated with such actions.

Videos and eyewitness accounts circulating on social media showed residents gathering around the accident scene with containers to collect spilled fuel, even as the possibility of fire, explosion and toxic exposure remained high.

Safety experts have consistently warned that scooping fuel from accident scenes is extremely dangerous, as even a small spark from a mobile phone, vehicle engine or nearby flame can ignite the highly flammable substance, leading to devastating explosions and loss of lives.

Emergency responders have repeatedly urged members of the public to stay away from fallen tankers and immediately alert the appropriate authorities rather than attempting to recover spilled fuel.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for greater public awareness of the dangers of fuel scooping, following several fatal tanker explosions recorded across Nigeria in recent years.
