The Presidency has accused some Nigerians in the diaspora of demarketing Nigeria through negative narratives and portrayals of the country.
The Presidency expressed concern that unfavourable representations of Nigeria abroad could affect the country's international image, investment prospects and economic opportunities.
It urged Nigerians living outside the country to play a more constructive role in promoting Nigeria's interests and projecting its achievements.
The government acknowledged that Nigerians have the right to raise concerns about challenges in the country but called for such concerns to be addressed in ways that do not unnecessarily damage Nigeria's reputation.
The comments are expected to generate debate among Nigerians at home and abroad, particularly over the balance between patriotism, constructive criticism and the right to speak about the country's challenges.
The Presidency maintained that Nigerians in the diaspora remain important stakeholders in Nigeria's development and can contribute significantly to attracting investment, strengthening international partnerships and promoting the country's image globally.
