The United States has carried out air strikes against two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first publicly acknowledged US military action against Iranian positions since late July.
According to the US Central Command, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, posing what Washington described as an imminent threat to commercial shipping.
The US military described the operation as a limited and precise action aimed at protecting civilian mariners, commercial vessels and the free flow of global trade through the strategic waterway.
Iran condemned the strikes, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reporting casualties among its personnel and civilians and vowing retaliation.
Iran subsequently launched ballistic missiles towards US military sites in Jordan, with Jordanian authorities saying they intercepted eight missiles that entered the country's airspace.
The renewed hostilities threaten to further escalate tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route through which a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes.
