Prominent Kenyan lawyer, scholar and Pan-Africanist Prof. PLO Lumumba has called on Nigeria to remove visa restrictions for citizens of other African countries, arguing that the continent's largest economy should lead efforts toward greater regional integration.
Speaking on the need to strengthen African unity, Lumumba said Nigeria should embrace an open-door policy for fellow Africans as part of the broader vision of promoting free movement of people, trade and investment across the continent.
"Nigeria should scrap visa barriers for Africans," Lumumba said.
According to him, easing travel restrictions among African nations would foster stronger economic cooperation, encourage tourism, facilitate business opportunities and accelerate the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He noted that reducing visa barriers would also enhance cultural exchange, improve people-to-people connections and reinforce the ideals of Pan-Africanism.
Lumumba's remarks have sparked conversations on regional integration, with supporters arguing that freer movement across Africa could unlock significant economic and social benefits, while others maintain that such policies should be implemented alongside robust security and immigration measures.
