Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts II, appeared before Judge Glazer by video following his arrest in Miami Beach on battery and battery by strangulation charges.
During the hearing, Ross’ attorney, Bradley Horenstein, told the judge that his client was a celebrity and asked whether his release could be expedited, also raising concerns about his safety while in custody.
“Mr. Roberts is a celebrity,” the lawyer said.
Judge Glazer responded by asking, “What does that mean?”
The attorney explained that Ross was being held in a red jumpsuit and said he was concerned about the rapper’s safety, before asking the court to consider expediting his release.
Glazer then addressed Ross directly.
“Hi, Mr. Roberts. I have no idea who you are, except as somebody here in the court who’s going to be treated fairly just like everybody else here,” the judge said.
The exchange quickly went viral on social media, with clips of the hearing generating reactions from fans and users amused by the judge’s apparent unfamiliarity with one of hip-hop’s most recognisable names.
Ross was arrested after voluntarily surrendering to Miami Beach police following allegations arising from an August 28 incident involving a former girlfriend. He faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery.
Ross has pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations. His legal team has described the accusations as false and said he was wrongfully accused.
The judge ultimately set bond in the case, and Ross was released from custody after posting bail. A stay-away order involving the alleged victim was also issued. His full arraignment is scheduled for October 22, 2026.
The courtroom exchange has since become one of the most widely discussed moments surrounding Ross’ arrest, particularly because the judge made clear that his celebrity status would not result in different treatment from other defendants appearing before the court.
The case remains ongoing, and the allegations against Ross have not been proven in court.
