Panic gripped residents of Oyingbo, Lagos, on Monday morning after a two-storey building at 54 Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, collapsed, leaving several occupants feared trapped.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that at least 15 victims including seven men, four women, and four children had been rescued with varying degrees of injuries and rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.
Director of the agency, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, said the building had earlier been marked “distressed” before it suddenly caved in around 2 a.m.
“Rescue operations by the Sari Iganmu Fire Station are ongoing,” Adeseye said, adding that the incident underscores the dangers of ignoring structural warnings.
The collapse adds to a growing list of building failures across Nigeria this year including similar incidents in Lagos, Jigawa, Kano, and Oyo often blamed on weak structures and poor compliance with safety standards.
