The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed claims that the country violates religious freedom, emphasizing that Nigeria remains tolerant and safe for all faiths.
Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, addressed the allegations during an interview on CNN on Tuesday, October 28. He denied claims by some foreign officials suggesting that terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians, calling the assertions misleading.
“Some of these claims are based on faulty data and assumptions. Criminals target both Christians and Muslims, particularly in northern Nigeria,” Idris said.
He warned that framing the violence as religious persecution could drive division between religious communities: “Criminals want to portray Nigeria as if there is a fight between Christians and Muslims. That’s not the reality. Nigeria is indeed a safe country.”
Acknowledging security challenges, Idris reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public safety: “There is a massive drive to ensure Nigeria is safe for everyone.”
