Tinubu Swears In Prof. Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman, Tasks Him on Electoral Integrity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking a new phase in Nigeria’s electoral leadership.

The brief but symbolic ceremony took place at 1:50 p.m. inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Amupitan took the oath of office before senior government officials and top aides.

President Tinubu charged the new INEC boss to uphold transparency, fairness, and professionalism in managing Nigeria’s elections, emphasizing that the credibility of the nation’s democracy depends on the Commission’s integrity and efficiency.

Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and respected legal scholar, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently ended. He becomes the sixth substantive chairman of INEC since its establishment.

The appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
