Two French Police Officers Suspended Over Alleged Rape of Woman in Bobigny Courthouse

The officers, aged 23 and 35, were arrested in Paris suburb Bobigny amid growing public outrage over sexual misconduct within French law enforcement.

Two French police officers have been arrested and suspended after allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman while she was in custody at a court building in Bobigny, a northern suburb of Paris, France.

According to Prosecutor Eric Mathais, the incident occurred overnight between October 28 and 29, after the victim was brought before the Bobigny public prosecutor’s office over a case involving parental neglect.

Both suspects, aged 23 and 35, were detained on Thursday, October 30, as investigations continue. The Paris Police Prefect, Patrice Faure, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the officers were immediately suspended pending investigation.

The internal police watchdog, Inspection Générale de la Police Nationale (IGPN), has launched a full inquiry into the assault.

This case adds to a string of sexual assault scandals involving French law enforcement. In a separate case, a police officer in Seine-et-Marne, near Paris, is set to stand trial for allegedly raping a woman twice inside a police station after she came to report domestic violence.

The incident has reignited debate in France about rape laws, consent, and police accountability. On Wednesday, the French Parliament passed a landmark bill redefining rape as any non-consensual sexual act — a move hailed by advocates as a “historic victory for women’s rights.”
