Al-Makura Calls for Renewed National Unity as Nigeria Approaches 2027 Elections

Ex-Nasarawa governor urges citizens to prioritise civic responsibility, youth mentorship, and collective action for national stability.

Former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, has called for a renewed sense of national unity and civic responsibility among Nigerians, stressing that the country’s progress depends on citizens working together across political, religious, and cultural divides.

Al-Makura made the remarks on Friday in a birthday statement marking his 73rd year, noting that unity is not just an ideal but the essential foundation for development—particularly as the nation grapples with economic pressures and prepares for the complexities of the 2027 general elections.

Reflecting on his decades of public service, the former governor said his leadership journey had been guided by curiosity, compassion, and a deep understanding that public office is a trust that must always serve the collective good. He recalled that his administration prioritised rebuilding infrastructure, strengthening institutions, and ensuring community participation in governance.

Al-Makura emphasised the importance of mentorship in shaping Nigeria’s future, urging the grooming of disciplined young leaders who embody integrity, responsibility, and a clear sense of purpose. According to him, Nigeria must invest in raising a generation committed to ethical governance and courageous enough to make difficult decisions in the national interest.

He reiterated that the country’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths, but must be harnessed through dialogue, mutual respect, and reconciliation rather than division. He urged political actors and community leaders to prioritise national cohesion, which he described as essential for economic stability and long-term development.

Speaking on challenges in public life, Al-Makura said resilience is a critical trait for any effective leader, noting that setbacks and scrutiny are inevitable for those who hold public trust. The true test of leadership, he added, is the ability to learn, adapt, and maintain moral clarity in difficult times.

The former senator reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress, saying his commitment is anchored on principle and shared vision rather than personal ambition. He maintained that party politics must never overshadow the pursuit of national interest.

Al-Makura also highlighted the need for inclusive growth, calling for deliberate policies that support marginalised communities and expand opportunities for persons with disabilities. No nation, he said, can prosper when segments of the population are excluded from education, economic advancement, and civic participation.

As he celebrated his 73rd birthday, Al-Makura expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, urging citizens to reject cynicism and embrace hope as a deliberate choice rooted in shared responsibility. The path to national renewal, he said, lies in unity, resilience, and a collective commitment to the common good.
