UPS Cargo Plane Crashes in Kentucky, Killing at Least Seven (Video)

A UPS flight bound for Honolulu crashed near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, sparking massive explosions and fires.

Tragedy struck in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday evening when a UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing at least seven people, according to Governor Andy Beshear.

The aircraft, identified as UPS Flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, went down around 5:15 p.m., just three miles from the airport, igniting a large blaze that engulfed nearby businesses.

Authorities confirmed that two companies—a petroleum recycling plant and an auto parts business—were hit by the crash. Several people remain unaccounted for, while 11 others sustained injuries.

Emergency responders battled explosions caused by the aircraft’s 38,000 gallons of jet fuel, as video footage showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Louisville officials have launched a full investigation in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
