Indian Bride Ends Marriage a Day After Wedding Over In-Laws’ ‘Unfriendly Behaviour’

The marriage dissolved within 24 hours as a panchayat intervened after the bride refused to stay at her husband’s home

An Indian bride has ended her marriage just a day after the wedding ceremony, citing unfriendly behaviour from her in-laws barely 20 minutes after arriving at their residence. The unusual incident, reported by The Indian Express on Sunday, December 7, 2025, has since stirred intense debate on social media.

According to Bhaskar English, the couple tied the knot on November 25 in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, celebrating with traditional rituals including the Jaimala and Dwar Puja. However, when the bride arrived at her in-laws’ home the following day for the Dulha Chehra Dikhai ceremony, she abruptly halted the ritual and demanded that her parents be called immediately.

Efforts by her husband and his family to persuade her failed, and even after her parents arrived, the bride refused to remain in the home, insisting that she was unhappy with the behaviour of her in-laws.

With tensions rising, a local panchayat convened to mediate the matter. After nearly five hours of deliberation, both families agreed to dissolve the marriage by mutual consent. All items and gifts exchanged during the wedding were returned, and the bride left with her family.

The incident was reported briefly to the emergency service Dial 112, but no formal police complaint was filed. Bhaluani Police Station in-charge Pradeep Pandey confirmed the report, stating that the matter was resolved amicably at the panchayat level.

The story quickly went viral on social media, triggering mixed reactions.

“This is better than ruining so many lives after doing ‘adjustments’ for a few years,” one user commented.

“She and her family should be punished. People have made marriage a joke,” another argued.

A third user wondered what might have transpired, writing, “Would’ve been better if she hadn’t married at all.”

The incident continues to fuel conversations around marital expectations, family dynamics, and the growing assertiveness of young brides in India.
