The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, has called on media practitioners across the country to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics and resist attempts to compromise their integrity through political pressure or financial inducements.
Akinmade made the call while addressing journalists, stressing that the credibility of the media remains critical to democratic governance, accountability, and public trust. He warned that allowing personal gain or political alignment to dictate reportage poses a serious threat to the role of the press as the conscience of society.
According to him, the growing menace of “brown envelope” journalism has continued to erode public confidence in the media, noting that journalists must consciously reject practices that undermine truth, fairness, and balance. He urged practitioners to remain guided by facts, accuracy, and the public interest, regardless of external pressures.
The governor’s aide emphasized that journalists are key partners in governance and nation-building, but such partnership must be anchored on professionalism, objectivity, and ethical responsibility rather than pecuniary gains or partisan loyalty. He added that the media’s power to shape public opinion should be exercised with restraint and a deep sense of accountability.
Akinmade further encouraged media organisations to strengthen internal editorial standards and continuous professional development to help journalists navigate ethical dilemmas in an increasingly politicised and commercialised media environment.
He reaffirmed the Ogun State Government’s respect for press freedom and constructive criticism, noting that responsible journalism contributes to better governance and informed citizenry, while unethical practices only weaken institutions and distort public discourse.
