Falana Warns Federal Government Against Allowing Trump to Stoke Religious Tensions in Nigeria

Human rights lawyer urges authorities to protect national unity and prevent external influence from fueling sectarian conflict

Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has cautioned the Federal Government against allowing former United States President Donald Trump to promote or influence any form of religious conflict in Nigeria. Falana issued the warning amid growing concerns over the impact of foreign political rhetoric on Nigeria’s fragile religious and ethnic balance.

In his statement, Falana emphasized that Nigeria is a sovereign nation with a complex social fabric that must be carefully protected from divisive narratives capable of inciting religious intolerance or violence. He stressed that any attempt by external political figures to frame Nigeria’s security or governance challenges along religious lines could deepen existing tensions and undermine efforts at national cohesion.

The senior lawyer called on the Federal Government to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional commitment to secularism, religious freedom, and peaceful coexistence. According to him, inflammatory statements or actions whether domestic or foreign should not be allowed to destabilize the country or polarize citizens along faith-based lines.

Falana also urged Nigerian authorities to prioritize inclusive policies, responsible diplomacy, and clear communication in engaging with international actors, noting that Nigeria’s internal challenges require homegrown solutions rooted in justice, equity, and the rule of law. He concluded by reaffirming that Nigeria must not become a theatre for external political agendas capable of igniting religious discord, calling on leaders to act decisively in the interest of peace and national unity.
