Federal Government and United Kingdom Warn Nigerians Against Fake Overseas Job Offers

Authorities raise alarm over rising employment scams targeting job seekers with fraudulent relocation promises

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Kingdom have issued a joint warning to Nigerians to beware of fake overseas job offers, amid growing cases of employment-related scams targeting individuals seeking opportunities abroad.

In separate advisories, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of the United Kingdom cautioned that fraudulent recruiters and criminal networks are increasingly exploiting the demand for foreign jobs by offering fake employment letters, forged visa documents, and deceptive relocation packages.

Authorities explained that many victims are lured with promises of high-paying jobs, fast-track visas, and guaranteed work permits, only to lose substantial sums of money through processing fees, travel arrangements, and other fabricated charges. In some cases, victims arrive overseas to discover that the job offers and sponsorship documents are not legitimate.

The governments urged job seekers to verify employment opportunities through official channels, including accredited recruitment agencies and recognised immigration platforms. They also advised Nigerians to be wary of unsolicited job offers received through social media, messaging apps, or informal intermediaries.

Officials stressed that legitimate employers and government-backed migration schemes follow transparent processes and do not demand excessive upfront payments outside official application fees. Prospective migrants were encouraged to conduct due diligence, cross-check company details, and confirm visa requirements directly with authorised institutions.

The renewed warning comes as international labour mobility continues to increase, with many Nigerians exploring education and employment opportunities abroad. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens from exploitation and urged the public to report suspicious recruitment activities to appropriate law enforcement agencies.
