WAEC Launches Digital Certificate Service Across Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone

New electronic platform allows candidates to access, share and verify academic certificates securely online

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially rolled out its digital certificate service across Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone, marking a major step toward modernizing academic records management in the region.

The newly introduced electronic platform enables candidates to access, download, share and verify their WAEC certificates online without relying solely on physical documents. The initiative is designed to improve convenience, enhance security and reduce the risks associated with lost, damaged or forged certificates.

According to WAEC, the digital certificate system allows past candidates to create secure accounts, retrieve their examination records and grant controlled access to institutions, employers or other verification bodies. The move is expected to simplify admission processes, job applications and credential authentication both within West Africa and internationally.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that digitization will help curb certificate fraud while strengthening confidence in academic verification systems. The platform incorporates security features intended to protect candidate data and ensure that shared certificates can be independently authenticated.

The rollout covers member countries under WAEC’s jurisdiction, ensuring that candidates who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone can benefit from the service.

Analysts say the introduction of digital certificates reflects a broader shift toward e-governance and digital transformation in education across Africa. By leveraging technology, WAEC aims to improve efficiency, reduce administrative bottlenecks and provide faster access to academic records.

Candidates are advised to follow official guidelines when registering for the digital service to ensure accurate record retrieval and secure usage. The launch represents a significant milestone in the evolution of examination management in West Africa, positioning the region closer to global best practices in digital credentialing.
