UK to Introduce E-Visas for Nigerians from February 25, 2026

Switch to digital visas driven by shortage of physical visa stickers, aims to modernize immigration process

The United Kingdom has announced that it will begin issuing electronic visas (e-visas) to Nigerian applicants from February 25, 2026, as it grapples with a shortage of physical visa stickers and accelerates its transition to a fully digital immigration system.

Under the new arrangement, successful Nigerian visa applicants will no longer receive traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports. Instead, their immigration status will be issued electronically and stored in a secure digital system accessible online. The move is part of the UK’s broader plan to modernize border control, improve efficiency, and reduce reliance on physical documentation.

Officials say the shortage of visa stickers has contributed to processing delays, making the shift to e-visas both necessary and timely. The digital visa system is expected to streamline application processing, reduce errors, and enhance security by minimizing the risk of loss, damage, or forgery associated with physical visa labels.

With the e-visa system, Nigerian travelers will be able to access their visa details through an online account, which can be shared with airlines, employers, schools, and border authorities as proof of immigration status. Applicants will be advised to ensure their personal details, including passport information, are correctly linked to their digital visa records before travel.

Immigration experts note that while e-visas offer convenience, applicants will need to be proactive in understanding how to access and present their digital status, especially during travel and official verification. Authorities are expected to issue guidance to help Nigerians adapt smoothly to the new system ahead of the rollout date.

The UK has been gradually expanding its use of e-visas for various nationalities as part of efforts to create a fully digital border and immigration framework. The inclusion of Nigerian applicants marks a significant step in that transition.

As the February 2026 start date approaches, Nigerian travelers are encouraged to stay informed about updated application procedures and ensure they are familiar with the requirements of the new digital visa system to avoid disruptions to travel plans.
