Federal Government Urges States to Sign $500 Million World Bank HOPE Programme Deal

Initiative targets improvements in education, healthcare and governance across Nigeria

The Federal Government has urged state governments to sign on to the $500 million World Bank supported HOPE programme aimed at strengthening education, healthcare and governance systems across Nigeria.

Officials say the programme is designed to support reforms that will improve public service delivery and institutional capacity at the state level. The initiative is expected to focus on key sectors including basic education, primary healthcare and governance structures that influence policy implementation and accountability.

According to government representatives, the HOPE programme will provide financial and technical support to participating states, helping them implement policies that promote better access to quality education and healthcare services for citizens. The programme also seeks to strengthen transparency and efficiency in government operations.

Authorities noted that active participation by state governments is critical to the success of the initiative, as most public services such as basic education and primary healthcare are largely managed at the state level. They therefore encouraged governors and relevant state institutions to sign the agreement and align their policies with the objectives of the programme.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the partnership with the World Bank will help accelerate reforms that improve human capital development and strengthen governance systems across Nigeria.
