The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to reverse the ban on degrees obtained from institutions in the Benin Republic and Togo.
The lawmakers made the appeal during deliberations on the impact of the policy on Nigerian students who enrolled in universities in the two neighbouring countries. They urged the government to review the directive and consider measures that would address the concerns raised while protecting the interests of affected students.
The Federal Government had earlier suspended the recognition and accreditation of degrees obtained from some institutions in Benin Republic and Togo following reports of irregularities in the admission and certification processes.
Members of the House noted that while the need to maintain academic standards and prevent certificate racketeering remains important, a complete ban could negatively affect Nigerians who legitimately pursued their education in the affected institutions.
The lawmakers therefore urged the relevant authorities to carry out a thorough review of the situation and implement a balanced solution that would safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s education system while also considering the welfare of students who may have been caught up in the policy.
